Your Android device — be it a smartphone, tablet, or other form — is probably pretty fast. Today’s quad-core processors and massive amounts of RAM keep your device eedeedy, but don’t you want to make sure you’re getting the best out of it? We’ve come up with the top 5 tips and tricks to keep your device running smoothly.

Speed Up Animations

Here’s a little secret when it comes to the settings app on most Android devices; there’s a hidden menu (If you have the “Developer Options” submenu already showing, skip ahead to the next paragraph). Scroll down to the very bottom, and get into the “About Phone/Tablet” submenu. You’ll find an option called “Build Number”; tap that repeatedly a few times, and there you have it! “You are now a developer.”

Now you’re going to want to explore that section, but be careful; some options can render your device inoperable. Scroll down until you find options containing the words “Animation Speed” (ex. Window Animation Speed, Transition Animation Speed, etc.), and set those to “.5x”. Congratulations! You’ve sped up your device’s system-wide animations by 100%.

Try A Free New Launcher

If you’re running an old or skinned device, odds are your launcher is either outdated or lagging with flashy, unnecessary animations. Head over to the Play Store and go straight into the “Personalization” category; there, you’ll find numerous paid and free launcher replacements (Action LauncherNova Launcher, and Themer are our favourites!)

Install CCleaner

CCleaner is a free desktop application that is also available for Android. It scans your device for obsolete files, empty folders, and unnecessary background processes. A quick daily scan and clean will instantly free up your hard drive, and reduce the amount of RAM your device is using, thus increasing its performance.

Close Apps You Aren’t Using

This is a simple one that many people seem to forget. After you leave an app, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not closed; access your device’s multitasking screen to swipe those performance-munching apps away.

And If All Else Fails….

You can easily flash CyanogenMod — a stock-Android based OS — onto your device if none of the above tips work for you, or if you simply want to try out something new. It’s fast, fluid, and is void of bloatware. Head over to http://get.cm/ and follow the on-screen instructions to get started.
